  1. This ia a good and carefully expressed overview of these hoards. I was however surprised at the statements in it that the hoard from Parkhill Farm, Lindores, Fife, was the ‘largest Scottish hoard of this period’ and that it ‘supposedly contained over one thousand coins”. On checking the note on this hoard in the Numismatic Chronicle by Veronica Butler (Veronica Smart) and Michael Dolley, I was amused to discover that the figure of c.1.025 coins given as the total number of coins in the hoard in the summary of it provided on the MCHBI site is a misinterpretation of the date of deposit of c.1025 suggested for the hoard by Butler and Dolley. As they indicate elsewhere in their note, the Parkhill Farm hoard was not large at all.
