Research Notes: Instructions for Authors

Research notes are typically between one and six pages in length, though will not be rejected if longer.  Authors are recommended to take full advantage of the potential of the internet and make use of images and weblinks as appropriate.  Authors should note that images will need to be given proper attribution details; and use of third-party material might be restricted. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that they have the necessary copyright permission for all illustrations. Submission of an article to the BNS Research Notes Blog will be taken as confirmation that such permissions have been obtained.

The content of offerings to the blog should be within the remit of the Society’s interests: “coins, medals, jettons and paper money of the British Isles, the Commonwealth and other territories that have been subject to British rule“. It should not be a venue for advertising, or simply revelling in the contents of a collection, but could cater for several types of short research publication.

Contributions are open to all (including authors who are not members of the Society). There is no limitation on the frequency of posts.   Non-members of the Society are encouraged to consider the benefits of membership of the BNS, and further details can be found here.

Choice of font and font type is up to the author, but please note that non-serif fonts such as Verdana or Calibri are preferred but not essential.  Documents can be submitted in any common format, though .doc or .docx are very much preferred.  It is also recommended to right align your text.

Intending authors should send their research notes or questions to the blog coordinator at bnsresearchblog@gmail.com.  They should also send (a) a short summary of the article and (b) an image file that can be used on the blog post page – this image should ideally be a .png format imaged with transparent background, though if you are unsure how to do this the send what you have (jpg format acceptable) and the blog coordinator will fix the background as needed.

Copyright:   It is recommended that authors include a CC BY-SA copyright notice at the end of their article. This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. More details, including the CC BY-SA copyright logo to use, are located here.  The blog coordinator can happily add the logo for you if necessary.

The coordinator will check the contribution for content suitability and correct image attribution etc, but will not be reviewing the content.  Peer review of the material is through the blog process. Normally the coordinator checking of the proposed paper will take place within 24-48 hours of receipt, and if there are no issues to address then the research note will be uploaded by the coordinator. Any comments on your article made by readers will be forwarded to you by the Blog Coordinator for your response on the Blog comment feature as appropriate.

Publication of the research note on the BNS blogsite does not imply BNS endorsement of the content.
